- Do it. You’re Ready
Need to know: his is also the decade when risk factors can have a major impact on your personal health. What risk factors are we talking about? The big three are family history, obesity, and smoking. Any of these can drastically influence your likelihood of cancer or cardiovascular disease.
You’re not as carefree as you were in your 30s – you’re much more invested in this whole take-care-of-yourself thing. Let’s take care of your 40s so your subsequent decades are marked by vitality and good fortune. Here’s a quick guideline:
Do it once a year : That’s what makes it an annual physical – you only have to schedule it once a year. And that one simple trip can knock out just about everything on the checklist for 40 somethings. Do it… You’re ready.
Give your doc a name: You mean you still don’t have a primary care physician? You’re in your 40s now. More than ever, your doctor needs to know you inside and out – literally. That relationship gives you the best fighting chance against some of those unmentionables (spoiler alert: we mention them below) that could start creeping into your life. Give your doctor a name. It’s that easy.
Reduce the risk: If you smoke, stop it. You don’t have superhuman lungs. The habit is killing you, and it will end your life too early if you don’t quit. Obesity: same deal. Reduce alcohol intake, switch to whole grains, go freaking vegan if you have to. And if you have family history of heart disease or cancer: Tell your doctor.
Let the screenings begin. No one’s saying all of these tests will be fun. But the alternatives can be far more undesirable. This right here is a big part of taking charge of your 40s:
• Normal BP (lower than 120/80) – get tested every 2 years.
• High BP (between 120/80 and 139/89) – get tested every year.
• Very High BP (over 140/90) – discuss treatment with your doctor.
Good news: Your annual physical will knock out the first three items in one visit. Request a physical now.
Maybe you don’t know everything… but you’re close. Here are a few interesting health nuggets to get you a little closer.
Great thing about these quick, multiple-choice quizzes – no matter how many answers you get right, you still come out ahead. You know, that whole knowledge-is-power thing. Man enough to test yourself?
